Description
Handmade measuring cups are a joy to use, right up until you realize your “one cup” holds a cup and a quarter. Clay shrinks as it dries and fires, so a cup that measures perfectly when it’s wet comes out of the kiln too small. These molds fix that.
Each set is made for one shrinkage rate. The molds start out bigger by exactly the amount your clay will shrink, so after firing, every cup lands on its true volume.
HOW IT WORKS
Roll out a slab and drape it over the mold. The outside of the mold becomes the inside of your cup, so the volume comes out right no matter how thick you roll. Trim the clay flush with the mold’s open edge, and that edge becomes your rim. Add a handle if you like, let it firm up, and lift it off.
WHAT’S INCLUDED
Four Sizes
1 cup, 1/2 cup, 1/3 cup, and 1/4 cup. After firing they hold 236.6, 118.3, 78.9, and 59.1 mL, filled level to the rim, the same as a standard US measuring set.
Sized for Your Clay
Choose your clay’s shrinkage rate, anywhere from 8% to 15% in half-percent steps. Not sure what yours is? Check the bag or your supplier’s data sheet, or measure it yourself with our Clay Shrinkage Calculator.
Labeled and Built to Hold Up
A sturdy bar across the open end of each mold carries the Modern Wolf logo, the cup size, and the shrinkage rate, so you’ll never mix up your sets. A slight taper helps the clay lift off cleanly, and rounded inside corners let your slab drape without tearing.
TIPS
- Dust the mold with cornstarch, or drape a thin cloth over it first, so the clay releases easily
- Lift the cup off at soft leather-hard, before it shrinks tight around the mold
- Shrinkage varies with clay, glaze, and firing, so test with water after your first firing
CARE
- Rinse with water and let air dry
- Keep away from high heat: no dishwasher, kiln, or hot car
- The molds are for clay use only. Finish your cups with a food-safe glaze and follow your clay and glaze manufacturer’s guidelines.
I made these because I wanted measuring cups I’d love to cook with that also measured right. I can’t wait to see your sets.
