Description
Every clay shrinks, and every clay shrinks a different amount. The number on the bag is a starting point, but your kiln, your cone, and even how wet you work all change it. Make a mug to hold a certain amount, a lid to fit a jar, or a tile to fit a frame, and a few percent is the difference between perfect and not quite.
The most reliable way to know is to measure your own clay, fired your own way. This set makes that easy.
Roll out a slab, press the cutter down to cut a strip exactly 12″ long, and stamp the ruler into it. Write the clay body and cone in the spaces on the stamp, let it dry, and fire it with your work. Lay the fired ruler next to a real one, and you’ll see exactly how much it shrank, in your clay and your kiln.
WHAT’S INCLUDED
The Cutter
Cuts a clean strip exactly 12″ by 1¼″, so every ruler you make starts at precisely the same size. A 3/4″ tall blade cuts cleanly through your slab, and a lip around the top gives you a comfortable place to press down evenly.
The Stamp
A full 12″ ruler marked every 1/8″, with numbered inches and labeled spaces for Clay Body, Cone, and Shrinkage. Your fired ruler becomes a permanent, labeled record you can keep on your studio shelf.
One Set, Every Clay
Make a ruler for each clay body you use and each cone you fire to. Next time you plan a piece, grab the right ruler and you’ll know what to expect.
Made in Our Studio
Each set is 3D printed by us and checked before it ships.
CARE
- Rinse with water and let air dry
- Keep away from high heat: no dishwasher, kiln, or hot car

I made this because I wanted to stop guessing and start knowing, and I hope it takes the guesswork out of your next firing too. Pair it with our free Clay Shrinkage Calculator to turn your measurement into a percentage.
